Tax Savings Opportunity for New Hiring

You may be able to save money on your federal taxes through the Work Opportunities Tax Credit (WOTC) program. The program is currently available for those employers who hire members of certain targeted groups before September 2011.

Businesses are allowed to claim a work opportunity tax credit equal to 40% of the first $6,000 of wages paid to employees of one of nine targeted groups. These groups are: (1) qualified members of families receiving assistance under the Temporary Assistance for Needy Families (TANF) program, (2) qualified veterans, (3) qualified ex-felons, (4) designated community residents, (5) vocational rehabilitation referrals, (6) qualified summer youth employees, (7) qualified members of families receiving Food Stamp assistance, (8) qualified Supplemental Security Income recipients, and (9) long-term family assistance recipients.

The 2009 Economic Stimulus Act expanded the work opportunity tax credit to include two new targeted groups: (1) unemployed veterans (40% of the first $12,000 of wages); and (2) disconnected youth (40% of the first $3,000 of wages).

Employers who are interested in earning the tax credit in 2010 should visit their local Work Source office or call (800) 669-9271, then submit an application to the Washington State Employment Security Department within 28 days after the new employee starts work.

Businesses certified for the credit must complete IRS Form 5884 when submitting their federal income taxes.
